50s Fashionable Frolics

The 1950’s era was distinctly fabulous.  The women were effortlessly glamorous, displaying their curves in ensembles that covered up yet made them overtly sexy.  Think tiny clinched in waists, A-line skirts, slight off-the-shoulder dresses, high neck blouses, neck scarfs, hats and vibrant red lipstick.  The leading icons for this style were Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, to name but a few.  These ladies knew exactly how to work their best assets and ooze style without revealing their modesty, but rather keeping it very much in tact.

I have fallen in love with the 50’s style, but I’m not the only one.  When you hear people discussing the ‘retro’ and ‘vintage’ look, the outfits are 50’s inspired with a modern twist.  I cannot get enough of  knee length dresses that pinch in at the waist, with platform bow tied shoes and a fascinator in my hair.  Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry are perfect examples of the 50’s glamour still clinging to the fringes of the fashion industry.

The modern gal can easily slip into the mindset that ‘less is more’ and unknowingly wear less and less clothes to make herself feel sexier and more glamorous.  Girls, this is so backwards.  A mini dress with some red 6inch heels will not make men see you as an independent sexy and powerful woman, it will only make him see you for one thing.  However, should you dress provocatively but covering up at the same time, this will make the men sexually attracted to you and interested in what is going on underneath your clothes…you.

I’ve just purchased this dress:

Warehouse, £55

Which I plan to wear with black lace tights, bow detailed black high heels and a hair net side hat, complete with drop curls in my hair and red lips.  This dress isn’t the epitome of 50’s style, but its a nod in that direction.  For all the girls wanting to jump on the vintage band wagon, I’ve had a dig around for my current favourite dresses that could get you looking as glamorous as Grace Kelly too.  Take a look:

Tiered Maxi Dress, £150 at Topshop     PPQ Clara Cocktail Dress, £29 on Very

Black Embellished Dress, £50 at Miss Selfridge     Red Flower Dress, £39 at River Island
