Is cosmetic surgery actually just misunderstood?

I’m a firm believer of ‘you do you’. As long as what you do doesn’t hurt anyone in any way, why shouldn’t you carry on?

Cosmetic surgery gets a bad reputation whenever it’s spoken about. There’s always this undertone that any form of cosmetic or plastic surgery is terrible, and you’re setting a bad example by getting it. This usually comes from all the celebs we see that are more plastic than flesh, going overboard with surgeries to create unrealistic body images for regular women – *cough* we’re looking at you Kardashian/Jenners!

Still, having a negative view of cosmetic surgery isn’t really fair. It’s a very misunderstood practise, and there’s really nothing wrong with it. If you open your mind and move away from the outrage of celebrities restructuring themselves for purely aesthetic means, you’ll learn why the industry is misunderstood…

A confidence boost

For a lot of women, cosmetic surgery is the only option to help them feel comfortable in their own skin. When there is something that you inherently dislike about yourself, it’s impossible to feel confident – no matter what you do. As such, some cosmetic procedures offer a way for women and girls to finally feel confident. It’s a way of correcting something that you have no control over, and that’s causing a lot of mental stress in your life. Surgery can save this, leading to a happier and more confident life.

Improved sex life

Cosmetic surgery can also be very good at improving someone’s sex life. Obviously, this spirals from the previous point about confidence. A woman that feels more confident in her body is more likely to translate those feelings to the bedroom. However, you also have specific procedures that can improve someone’s sex life. There are non-surgical cosmetic treatments – like the O-Shot – that can improve vaginal health and prevent things like excessive dryness. Instantly, this makes sex a lot more enjoyable for both parties!

Solution to medical problems

Finally, on a more serious note, cosmetic surgery doesn’t get enough credit for how it helps women who have undergone injuries or suffered from serious medical problems. For instance, someone who has broken their nose can get rhinoplasty to correct it and make it look new. Nose surgery is also sometimes used to treat problems like a deviated septum, improving your breathing!

Of course, breast implants or breast reconstruction surgery are also very misunderstood. People see breast implants as bad, encouraging young women to think that they need big boobs to be beautiful. However, this surgery is often used on women who have survived breast cancer. As part of the treatment, they may have had part of their breasts removed, so cosmetic surgery helps to restore them and improve confidence once more.

As you can now see, this industry is much more than it’s made out to do. Yes, a lot of celebrities and people get cosmetic surgery for the “wrong” reasons. But, discouraging people from ever getting it is just as bad. It clearly does a lot of good for someone’s mental and physical health, so let’s think twice before we judge someone that’s considering – or had – cosmetic treatments.
