Top 10 Summer 2020 Fashion Trends To Follow (For When We’re All Released From Lockdown)

I would bet all my savings (which is nada) on the fact we’re all sick and tired now of our lockdown looks. Slouchy clothes, comfortable fabrics, sweatpants all day or, day I say, pajamas from noon to night. It’s been fun to chill, sure, but can we return to normality soon pretty please?

Given that our spring wardrobe is the aforementioned home attire and you’ve probably lost sight of any trends that were meant to be stocked in the shops we can’t go to, I figured I’d give us all a rundown on the biggest S/S 2020 trends for something to look forward to this summer.

Below are my favourites from the runway round up – the trends I think will be most wearable but more importantly, the most FUN for when we are FREEEEEEEE.

Block Neon

It’s bold, for sure. Block neon, nay, acid colours hit the runway in a big way. Think loud and proud, bright and light. From head to toe, pick the colour that best reps your personality. For true catwalk inspiration, wear your neon colour from head to toe – albeit in one dress, a top and skirt, or layers of the same neon shade.  Make sure when you embrace this trend, you bring bags of confidence – that bright lime ensemble or acid pink number needs your highlighter A-game to carry it through.

PuffBall Sleeves

For your blouses this summer, you need to puff it up a little. Or, a lot. Puffed sleeves are a big thing – from shoulders down to the arm, sleeves really took shape on the runway for S/S 2020. Unlike the terrifying 80’s shoulder pads, the puff shoulder is a feminine silhouette , so get ready to embrace it.

Behold, The Bra

Bras, bras and more bras. Whether it was embroidery, embellishment, sequins or fabric detailing focus around the breast area, or outright bra tops where crop tops used to be – this season saw the bra become the major player on the runway. Apt, given that we’re all likely to want to run outside in whatever we’re wearing once lockdown gets lifted. A tough trend to embrace for sure, but cool AF if you do it properly. Find your happy balance with what you’re comfortable exposing – or keep things casual by layering your bra under a trench or waistcoast (two more big time trends this summer, see below).

Peekaboo Sheer

An easy trend and extremely wearable – just add some layers of sheer fabric to your ensemble and you’re good to go. You can have a play with colours, textures and silhouettes. Why don’t you embrace the above bra trend by adding a dark sheer overlay as a top?

Prints – Power Up!

With this trend, more is more. Clashing prints, head-to-toe bold prints, oversized florals and pretty much anything you can think of that involves…prints. For the brave, this outfit will work as long as you carry it well, keeping makeup and hair more towards a more minimalist stance to balance it out. I personally love this trend because it embraces the fun and playful side of life, something we all need after the lockdown ends. I think we should all head into summer with bursts of colour and big ass bold patterns.

That 70’s Vibe

The 70’s era was well and truly present on the S/S 2020 catwalks. Super strong and wide collars were everywhere, as were cutesy midi dresses and playful printed suits. They may be pieces inspired from a time gone by, but these will be wearable for many years to come. A well structured two-piece suit is always a good idea. I personally struggle to work the 70’s look into my style (I’m more a vintage 50’s babe) but I am willing to give it a go this summer, purchasing a blazer and pants combo.

Into The Jungle

The tropical paradise print was THE print that graced the runways in one form or another. Greenery flourished in dresses, blazers, shorts, blouses and even shoes, handbags and hats too. Think ‘into the jungle’ and you’ll nail this trend with ease. Forget pretty poppy flowers or cutesy roses styles, this floral print is immersed in tropical foliage. Greens, yellows and perhaps a pop of pink here and there as an added bonus.

Re-Trenched

The trench is back (did it ever go away?) and the key overcoat this summer. Albeit glossy, silver, mint or traditional, the trenchcoat is a must-buy item to be on trend this summer. An easy piece to wear, if you’re yet to own a trenchcoat now is the time to break that dry spell and embrace some rainy days in style.

Boho in Block White

What a happy girl I am to see this trend hot for summer. Carefree, pure and the epitome of ‘haute bohemian’ style, white dresses are all the rage. Whether your white dress is maxi or midi, best keep the silhouette loose and floaty (not bodycon) to nail this trend correctly. Feel free to add a large black belt, some chunky boots or coloured accessories – you don’t have to stick to white everything…just the dress itself. I’ll be rocking mine pure boho here in Singapore with tan sandals, stacked bangles, sunglasses & sunhat.

Get Waisted

Alongside the 70’s trend is the comeback of the waistcoat…naturally.  Don’t worry, it’s not formal attire. You can wear yours over shirts, dresses and paired with shorts. Think festival, and you’ll be fine. Try mix and match different prints from your waistcoat to your top underneath, or alternatively wear the waistcoat as just a top alone, like Saint Laurent displayed on their runway.

Usually I don’t read article on blogs, but I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to try and do so! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thanks, quite nice article.
